What should be the dose and frequency?
Management of Herpes Zoster:
- Acute Treatment: Take 800 mg orally every 4 hours, five times daily, for 7 to 10 days.
- Initial Treatment: Consume 200 mg every 4 hours, five times daily, for a duration of 10 days
- Chronic Therapy: Administer 400 mg twice daily for up to 12 months, followed by re-evaluation.
- Children (2 years and older): Orally take 20 mg/kg per dose four times daily (80 mg/kg/day) for 5 days.
- Adults and Children over 40 kg: Take 800 mg four times daily for 5 days.
What are the common side effects of Acyclovir (250 mg)
General:
Severe allergic reactions, fever, headaches, pain, sleep disturbances, angioedema, and swelling in the hands or feet are possible side effects.
Central Nervous System:Aggressive behavior, agitation, unsteadiness, coma, confusion, decreased consciousness, dizziness, hallucinations, numbness, burning, or tingling in the arms or legs, seizures, drowsiness, and tremors are potential effects.
Gastrointestinal :Diarrhea, gastrointestinal discomfort, vomiting, and nausea are possible side effects.
Blood: Anemia, reduction in white blood cells, and a decrease in platelets may occur.
Liver: Increased liver function tests, inflammation of the liver, and jaundice are potential outcomes.
Musculoskeletal: Muscle pain and temporary paralysis of certain body parts may occur.
Skin:
Hair loss, redness, itching, pale skin, rash or blisters, and hives are potential adverse reactions.
Eye:
Vision disturbances.
Genitourinary:
Kidney failure, increased blood urea nitrogen levels, presence of blood in urine, and reduced or absent urination are potential effects.
