Anastrozole is an anticancer medication which was approved for its medical use on 27th December 1995.
Mechanism of Action of Anastrozole
Anastrozole is a powerful and selective non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor that effectively hinders the aromatase enzyme in all tissues, leading to the suppression of estrogen production. This significant reduction in estrogen levels ultimately inhibits the proliferation and dissemination of hormone receptor-positive tumor cells.

Uses of Anastrozole
The Anastrozole Tablet is designed for the treatment of early and advanced hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women unresponsive to alternative anticancer treatments. Additionally, it is prescribed as a second-line therapy to prevent hormone receptor-positive breast cancer and to address male gynaecomastia.
Anastrozole Drug administaration and Dosage available
Anastrozole is available as a film-coated tablets in the dose 1mg that is indicated for oral intake daily, with or without meals.
Warnings, Precautions and Side Effects of Anastrozole
Warnings
Anastrozole Tablet is contraindicated for premenopausal women and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Throughout the course of Anastrozole Tablet treatment, your doctor may regularly assess your complete blood count, serum calcium, vitamin D, lipid profile, liver function tests, and bone mineral density to mitigate potential serious complications. It is crucial to inform your doctor if you currently have or have a history of lung problems, heart issues, liver disease, or kidney problems.
Precautions
The use of Anastrozole Tablet may result in fertility issues for both men and women. Pregnant women are advised against using this tablet due to the potential for fetal harm. Notify your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to conceive before initiating this treatment. It is recommended to undergo pregnancy testing for women of reproductive potential at least 7 days before starting Anastrozole treatment. Consult with your healthcare provider about effective contraceptive methods to be used during and for 3 weeks after the final dose of Anastrozole. Breastfeeding is not recommended while undergoing treatment with Anastrozole.
Side Effects
Common side effects anticipated during the course of treatment with Anastrozole Tablet include hot flashes, stiff joints, tingling, carpal tunnel syndrome, hair thinning, rash, nausea, vaginal dryness, vomiting, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, elevated blood cholesterol levels, increased sweating, bone pain, and musculoskeletal pain. If you encounter persistent chest pain, numbness, or allergic reactions following the intake of this tablet, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
Word Of Advice
Anastrozole may induce fatigue, dizziness, and increased drowsiness. If you experience feelings of tiredness or weakness, it is advisable to refrain from driving or operating machinery.

Anastrozole Tablet is prescribed as an adjunct to other anticancer treatments (chemotherapy and surgery) to treat hormone receptor positive early and advanced breast cancer.
Anastrozole Tablet may cause menopause-like symptoms such as hot flashes, sweating and headache. Drinking caffeine may worsen these symptoms and hence caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes are not recommended during Anastrozole treatment.
Healthcare providers will conduct physical examination and blood tests to evaluate bone mineral density before prescribing and during treatment with Anastrozole. Women of reproductive potential will be tested for pregnancy before starting this treatment.
Patients who are allergic to Anastrozole or its ingredients and pregnant women should not take Anastrozole Tablet.
