Acetylcysteine
This page contains brief details about the drug acetylcysteine, it’s indication, dosage & administaration, mechanism of action, related brands with strength, warnings and common side effects.
Background and Date of Approval
The U.S. FDA-approved Acetylcysteine to treat paracetamol overdose and respiratory conditions on January 23, 2004. Acetylcysteine is an antidote with an active ingredient called Acetylcysteine. It belongs to the medication class known as mucolytics agent. Acetylcysteine thins and loosens thick phlegm, making it easier to cough up and clear from the respiratory system.
Mechanism of Action of Acetylcysteine
Acetylcysteine tablets function as a mucolytic agent, effectively breaking down and diluting mucus within the respiratory tract. This process enhances airway clearance, providing relief from symptoms associated with conditions characterized by excessive mucus production.
Acetylcysteine injection operates by replenishing glutathione levels within the body, aiding in the detoxification process of harmful substances such as acetaminophen (paracetamol). This increase in glutathione levels serves as a protective measure for the liver against the damage induced by an acetaminophen (paracetamol) overdose.
